Q+A

What is the Sound Food Uprising Workshop?

The Sound Food Uprising Workshop is a two-session food and cooking education class. This program is in its pilot stage through 2017 and alpha students have the chance to help shape the program as it evolves and is refined.

So, what's the big idea?

This program is the start of something big – changing how Puget Sound eats for good. The Sound Food Uprising workshop – and the larger campaign that will surround it – uses education about food and cooking and harnesses our region’s pioneering spirit to dramatically improve our food supply and our health.

What will I learn?

The Sound Food Uprising Workshop is highly interactive and participatory by design. Students:

  • Get a peek “behind the curtain” of the food industry.

  • Learn “strategic cooking” tips, i.e., instead of just learning a recipe by rote, learn knife skills, prep strategies and shopping hacks that translate across all types of meal preparation.

  • Identify small changes that make a big impact (tip: choose Lay's potato chips, with three ingredients, instead of additive-laden Flamin' Hot Doritos.)

  • Build unity by learning, cooking, and sharing meals as a team.

  • See how demand for better food can clean up our region's food supply.

Can you give me a little history?

The Sound Food Uprising Workshop, our food and cooking education class for adults, is built on the success of our Beecher's Pure Food Kids Foundation program. The foundation was established in 2006 with a mission to empower kids to make healthy food choices for life. Through its signature program, the “Food Detectives” workshop, the Pure Food Kids Foundation has educated more than 105,000 students in 345 Puget Sound-area schools.

Now, we're aiming to teach 1 million adults the power of pure food and voting with food dollars!

Wait, are you going to try to sell me cheese?

Let's get this out there: We're all pretty into cheese around the office. And while Sugar Mountain donates 1% of sales to our foundation, we in no way promote or talk about Beecher's Handmade Cheese in the Sound Food Uprising or Pure Food Kids workshop.
